The 704 is the surf spinning reel that grew out of the Spinfisher 700, Penn's first spinning reel series, introduced in 1961.
The bail spring is the usual wear point on a fished 704, and a tired one lets the bail close softly or not at all.
Price range is INFERRED from completed eBay listings; verify against current sold comps before bidding.
Eleven complete 704 Spinfishers are listed, most at $65–90 delivered, and not one is described as serviced or tested, so assume every reel here needs a clean and a drag check. Totals run from $52 (a zero-feedback seller) to $89 for a reel bundled with a vintage Penn catalog. Free shipping and that catalog are the only real differentiators. The parts reel is a poor deal at $71, more than a complete one. On any of them, check that the bail snaps shut firmly. Fishers should take the $68 or $73 reel and service it; Best Offer is open on most.
Delivered prices include shipping as eBay quoted it to a US address on Oct 1, 2026. Many sellers charge by distance, so your total may differ — eBay shows your exact total before you buy.

$68.16 delivered on Buy It Now, the lowest total from a seller with feedback and at the bottom of the $65–90 band. The title makes no condition or function claim, so ask whether the bail snaps shut and the anti-reverse holds. Seller feedback is 99.3%, fine but worth a glance at recent comments.
Penn Spinfisher 704 Saltwater Vintage Reel

A green Greenie at $73.27 delivered with Best Offer open, from a 100% feedback seller, low in the typical band. There's no tested claim, so the value rests on the photos: confirm the bail closes crisply and the handle turns smoothly, and try an offer around $60 plus shipping.
Penn Spinfisher 704 Greenie Spinning Reel Vintage

$88.75 delivered with Best Offer open, and it comes with a vintage Penn catalog, a period extra that suits a shelf display. The reel alone would sit at the top of the band, so the catalog is what the premium buys. Ask the catalog's year and whether it lists the 704.
Penn Spinfisher 704 saltwater/heavy freshwater spinning reel+Penn Catalog

Sold for parts with bad paint and the wrong handle, at $71.07 delivered, which is more than the $68 complete reel. It's Buy It Now with no offer option, so it only works as a refinish project if the seller will drop well below the ask; otherwise buy a complete reel.

See all current listings on eBay ⟶The 704 is the surf spinning reel that grew out of the Spinfisher 700, Penn's first spinning reel series, introduced in 1961. The 704 added a one-piece rotor cup that stood up better to knocks, and early reels came in mint green, the 'Greenies' that collectors and surfcasters still seek out.
In the late 1970s Penn switched to the gold-and-black finish and the 704Z name, with parts staying interchangeable throughout. Many surfcasters converted their reels to manual pickup, with no bail, using Penn's conversion kit, because there is less to break.
Penn built these reels in Philadelphia, shelved the 704Z and 706Z in the early 2000s, and briefly brought them back in 2013 after demand from anglers. Our latest snapshot found about 11 complete green 704s, most at $65 to $90 delivered, none of them described as serviced or tested.
Check the bail spring and the anti-reverse, the usual wear points; buying a cheap one and servicing it yourself is common.
