The Mitchell 300 is the open-face spinning reel that taught much of the world to spin-fish. It was introduced in 1948 by the Carpano & Pons factory in Cluses, France.
In the United States it was sold through the Garcia company, which handled Mitchell from 1947 to 1978, and from April 1957 the reels themselves were inscribed Garcia Mitchell 300. Mitchell's own figure is more than 25 million 300s sold, and the French factory closed at the end of the 1980s, after which most Mitchell production moved to Taiwan.
From 1971 most reels carry a letter date code, starting with A for 1971. Our latest snapshot found more than 40 listings, most working French-made reels at $25 to $70 delivered.
Early 1950s versions, boxed sets with spare spools and new-in-box reels are where collectors pay up. The common faults, a weak bail spring and a slipping anti-reverse, are cheap to fix.
